From monolith to microservices — energy industry software

Period
2013 – 2020
Role
Full Stack Developer → Lead IT Solution Architect
Monolith to microservices transformation

Scope

  • Directed technology and innovation for a leading all-in-one energy industry software house (~120 employees), preparing decision proposals and software architectures for CEO and CTO.
  • Designed the transformation from a monolith to a containerized microservice architecture and drove the change to a React-based web architecture, including backend and test infrastructure.
  • Introduced Git and GitLab, split up the legacy repositories, and implemented containerized CI/CD with containerized test databases.
  • Led the DevOps and backend team, managed project teams of 4–5, and served as a member of portfolio management.
  • Product owner of a custom multi-database framework: a fluent C# API for typesafe SQL queries with code generation, plus a unit-testing API for Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQL Server and SQLite.
  • Planned and implemented a private cloud backend, a multi-language CI development platform and a web-based customer service center for B2B energy billing.

Technologies: C#, .NET, React, Docker, GitLab, Oracle, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, SQLite

Key Skills Demonstrated

  • Technology Leadership: Head of Technology and Innovation — architecture decisions prepared for and carried with CEO and CTO.
  • Architecture Evolution: Monolith to containerized microservices, desktop to web — planned as a transformation, not a rewrite gamble.
  • DevOps From Zero: Git, GitLab, containerized CI/CD and test databases introduced into a grown engineering organization.
  • Framework & API Design: A typesafe SQL API with code generation and a database unit-testing API, run as internal products.
  • Team Leadership: DevOps and backend team lead, project teams of 4–5, member of portfolio management.
  • Product Ownership: Owning an internal framework end to end, from roadmap to adoption.
